Is $19,500 to install a new shower a fair price?
Project Details
I recently had a new shower installed for $19,500. The salesman told us it was caulkless, but this is not true. The installation quality is poor; they cut my tile back too far (about 2.5 inches), used damaged material in a corner, and applied an excessive amount of caulk/glue that covers the edges of the trim unevenly. I was also told there would be no caulk used due to a special interlocking system. There was a significant delay (over 2 months) for the infinity drain cover, leaving a large hole in the floor. I waited until I received the cover to sign the certificate of completion. I asked for a discount to cover the cost of repairing the tile and other issues, and was told to get estimates. Two weeks later, I received an email stating they were suing me for non-payment, despite having paid a $6,000 down payment and financing the rest. I had to sign off for them to receive the remaining amount after being threatened with a lawsuit and a lien on my house, with the intention of fighting it through the courts. The existing tile was old and painted when I bought the house, but the paint scrapes off to reveal subway tile underneath. My plan was to remodel the bathroom and restore the tile later. I am very disappointed with the install and feel ripped off. I am seeking legal advice or other recourse, but I'm finding it difficult to find an attorney in Alabama willing to take a case for less than $50,000. Small claims court in Alabama has a $6,000 limit, which is less than the total cost or even the down payment. The company did offer to replace a wall, but I believe this would not fix the core issue of the tile being cut incorrectly and would look bad. The white trim used was apparently scrap material pieced together. The company is licensed and insured, and is a licensed Kohler dealer.
