Is $10,000 to install 14-foot posts on footings and remove angled support for a deck a fair price?
Project Details
My wild Hemlock trees are now gone, uncovering a nice vista. I want to refresh my balcony deck, ensuring it is safe and sound, and remove all top wood and rails to replace them with TimberTech Vintage PVC. I am trying to decide whether to replace the existing angled supports with long posts, as two out of three contractors recommended 14-foot posts instead of the 20-year-old angled support system. This has become my toughest decision for this small project.

Replace cedar deck boards with composite and address structural issues
This quote involves the comprehensive replacement of existing cedar deck boards with composite material for a deck approximately 1,000 sq ft in size. The project also includes addressing a significant structural issue concerning a missing beam at the transition point where the deck steps down to a second level. Two distinct approaches were proposed for this structural repair: - Solution 1: Install a new beam along with a row of concrete footings and supporting posts. - Solution 2: Eliminate the stepdown/multi-level design by raising and extending the existing joists, and installing taller posts at the end of the deck.

Reface existing deck, build new stairs, and new railing
- Refacing of the existing deck. - Construction of new stairs, including changes to width and relocation to the side instead of a wrap-around design. - Installation of new railing. - Contractors noted the deck structure appears acceptable, but additional support like sistering joists may be added if problems are discovered during floor replacement.
