Is $500 to replace a furnace pressure switch a fair price?
Project Details
I am a new homeowner with an old furnace (10-15 years old) that recently stopped working. I called a technician who diagnosed a faulty pressure switch, applied a temporary fix, and quoted $500 for the replacement part and labor, plus a $100 dispatch fee. I got a second opinion, and that technician cleaned the pressure tube and drain trap, stating that overheating and old age are likely the issues and that the furnace might need replacing if the problem recurs. The second technician also said there's no such thing as a temporary fix for a pressure switch that needs replacement, which makes me question the first quote. I have zero HVAC knowledge and am concerned about being scammed and about safety. I am now considering shopping for a new furnace. I am located in the DC/MD area.
