Is $5,000 to upgrade duct work and run a new drain line a fair price?
Project Details
I am experiencing significant issues with my new Trane/American Standard 5-ton 15.6 SEER AC unit, which was installed last September in my attic. Since installation, I've had multiple condensate float switch issues, needed refrigerant, and discovered the plenum was falling away from the air handler, causing cool air to escape into the attic. Recently, I experienced water damage to my ceiling and new carpet due to water leaking from the air handler's support bracket, outside the drip pan. The condensate line was found to be full of growth. There's been conflicting advice from technicians regarding capping the condensate access tube. The original installer now claims my duct work doesn't support the 2000CFM of the air handler, leading to back pressure issues with the plenum and ducting split boxes, and I've noticed condensate-related damage on my ceiling. My warranty expires next month, my ceiling is damaged, the plenum is patched with mastic, duct tape, and metal tape, and I still see a small seep, leading to no confidence in the drain line's integrity. The company has sent me a quote for $5,000 to upgrade the duct work and run a new drain line out of the attic, but the problems are still unresolved.

Redesign air distribution, install new duct system, and exterior ducting with stucco
This quote is for a comprehensive redesign of the home's air distribution system and installation of new ductwork, including exterior ducting and stucco work. It does not include a new AC unit or furnace, focusing solely on duct work, design, and labor. The need for this work was determined by a diagnostic that identified several issues with the existing HVAC system: - The current intake vent is undersized for the 5-ton AC unit, leading to choking and increased noise. - Significant static air loss is occurring due to poor duct work and design. - Ducts in the attic are improperly routed and hung, with excessive bends under the house, hindering airflow. The proposed solution includes: - Running new ducts on the exterior of the house. - Constructing a frame for the exterior ducts. - Applying stucco over the exterior ducts to seamlessly blend them with the house's facade. - Creating new access points to the attic through the roof for duct routing. - Relocating the main air intake from the living room floor to the attic to help exhaust hot air.
