Is $2,000 to perform a nitrogen leak test on a 3 ton AC unit a fair price?
Project Details
I am a new homeowner in the Austin area and worried about getting ripped off. My 3 ton AC unit was freezing up. A company performed basic sniffer and pressure tests and confirmed a leak but couldn't find the location. I was initially quoted $660 for a detailed test, which I thought was for nitrogen, but it was for a detailed sniffer test. The nitrogen test was quoted at $2000+. They immediately dropped the price to $350 when I hesitated, which felt like a red flag. I was also told it might be better to replace the indoor and outdoor units, which are less than 5 years old and under manufacturer's warranty, due to potential repair costs. I am seeking advice on what a fair leak detection cost is.
