Is $2,200 to replace AC unit with a reconditioned one a fair price?
Project Details
My AC condenser wasn’t working, so I had a company come out. They first replaced the board, but then discovered a leak in the coolant line. They told me it was somewhere in the aluminum coil and therefore unfixable, and offered me a reconditioned replacement unit. After they left, I listened to the hissing sounds, unscrewed a single panel, and found a spot where two pipes were rubbing, and where one has a pinhole leak. I sent a video to the repair guy, and he emphasized that aluminum lines can’t be fixed. To me, these pipes appear to be copper, which then connect to aluminum coils. I'm questioning if this leaky pipe, which I scratched to show its copper surface, is fixable, and if replacing the entire unit is truly warranted, especially since they didn't even take the panel off to check.
