Is $2,900 to replace kitchen hood vent ducting and roof cap a fair price?
Project Details
I recently realized that my kitchen hood was attached to a flex pipe only by tape, which has come loose. An HVAC company came to look at it and recommended replacing it with a 6-inch steel pipe. What surprised me is that they also want to change what's on top of the roof, saying the one I have restricts airflow and the new pipe would not fit. The pipe goes from the kitchen through the attic. I'm questioning if it's really necessary to change the part that goes through the roof and the part on top of the roof.

The current flex pipe, which was only attached by tape and has come loose, will be replaced with a 6-inch steel pipe. Additionally, the part of the vent that goes through the roof and the cap on top of the roof will be replaced with a T-top, as the current setup is said to restrict airflow and would not accommodate the new pipe. - Ducting Material: 6-inch steel pipe - Roof Vent Type: T-top
