Is $200,000 to add a kitchen bumpout a fair price?
Project Details
My wife and I have a traditional colonial layout. The main problem is that the main furnace exhaust is in the center of the house, behind a false cabinet, and cannot be moved, which complicates any re-configuring of the layout. The first recommendation I had from a GC involved (essentially) flipping the kitchen + dining room and having the eating space be on the right side of what is currently the kitchen. The downside to that is the 'flow', considering the number of internal/external entrances to the kitchen that would be in that space. I'm out of ideas, and am not sure what else is feasible. I personally do not care if we have a dedicated/formal dining room, as long as we have a space for a kitchen table, where we can host holidays or larger dinner parties. I don't mind adding a card table - but our total prep space is incredibly small currently, and it's becoming a frustration while cooking. I had considered moving the fridge (which is next to the furnace exhaust) to the back wall and making that side an island that opens to the living room, which would require some kind of large column to encase the exhaust. I think the biggest issue is that I saw the above proposed floor plan (the bumpout), fell in love with it, and now everything else looks lame. The numbers never go down after a project starts, so it’d be pretty tough to stomach that.
