Is $10,000 to install a water softener a fair price?

I was at Home Depot and a representative offered a free water test. My water is hard, which I already knew as I'm on a well. The company claimed the hard water was damaging my pipes, but my home was custom built from the ground up two years ago, so the pipes are brand new and shouldn't need anything for a long time. I found the price of $10,000 for a water softener to be ludicrous and the sales tactics fishy, even though the company seems legitimate. My neighbor is the plumber who did my entire house, so it wouldn't be hard to get a second opinion.
