Is $4,600 to replace a piece of the sewer line a fair price?
Project Details
I live in a two-story townhome. A leak occurred when both upstairs bathrooms were in use, specifically when one person was showering and another was bathing. The bathrooms are back-to-back. I initially called the plumbing company to re-pipe the whole house. The first technician cut open the ceiling below the bathtub and, despite my pointing out a leaking bathtub faucet, dismissed it. He couldn't recreate the leak but identified an old sewer line from the 70s as the likely issue. After the sewer line repair, the leak immediately re-occurred when my son took a bath. A supervisor later confirmed the bathtub faucet was the actual problem, stating the first technician didn't investigate enough. I'm now unsure how to proceed with payment for the sewer line work, especially since the original problem wasn't fixed and I haven't received an estimate for the faucet repair. I have already paid a $600 deposit.

Replace a piece of the sewer line
This quote is for the replacement of a section of the sewer line. The initial leak occurred while both upstairs bathrooms were in use. A technician investigated by cutting open the ceiling below the bathtub. He identified a "spartan sewer line from the 70s" as the probable source of the leak and suggested replacing that piece. The work was performed. Note: The leak reoccurred immediately after this repair, and a subsequent supervisor visit identified the bathtub faucet as the actual source of the leak, not the sewer line.
Repair sewer lateral
Initial sewer lateral repair using the pipe burst method. The original scope included the repair of the main sewer lateral and associated permits. After the initial work, it was discovered that the main line was not connected to the side line for an added-on bathroom. The correction required an additional permit and extra labor to connect the side line to the main line. - Initial sewer lateral repair - Initial permits: $1,500 - Additional permit for correction: $500 - Extra labor for correction: $1,000
