Is $89,000 to install a 49-panel solar system a fair price?
Project Details
I received a quote for a solar system and am concerned about the pricing. The installation cost seems to be about twice the retail price of the parts (estimated $60,000 for installation vs. $30,000 for parts). I believe nearly $90,000 for a 21kW system is ridiculous, especially since it's not an unusually complex system, has no battery, and the roof is easily accessible and not steep. My house has a new roof, put on in 2022. I have two 200W panels in the garage that are half empty, so no panel updates are needed. This is a cash price, and I won't be financing it. I suspect price gouging due to a rush before the tax rebate's early sunset, as the company stated they've raised prices and are fully booked. Other installers are quoting significantly lower rates ($3-3.1/w compared to this company's $4.20/w). I am waiting for more quotes. I also have questions about the impact on my roof warranty and the installation company's responsibility for any roof leaks caused by the installation.
