Is $10,000 to convert a tub to a walk-in shower a fair price?
Project Details
I live in a 100-year-old, two-story house, and this is for our only bathroom. I'm concerned about the reasonableness of the estimate. The gentleman is a one-man operation, and while he was nice and articulate, he was vague about his work vehicle, which made me wonder how he transports tools and removes debris. He showed me many pictures of his purported work, but I haven't received the references I requested yet. He also seemed available to start the job anytime, which felt like a red flag during what should be a busy season. My stepson advised me I might be getting scammed. The contractor requires money upfront for materials, with labor cost due after the job is done. He mentioned that itemization could only be done after all materials were selected. I've tried to check him out and found some Instagram posts from a few years ago where he was looking for workers, including Class A tile setters, but he said he got tired of competency and reliability issues.
