Is $5,000 to sand and oil 2,500 sqft ipé deck a fair price?
Project Details
I have a 2,500 sqft ipé deck that I've been diligently maintaining over the years. Typically, every few years, I hire someone for a gentle sanding, followed by four days of applying Bona decking oil. This process leaves the deck looking brand new, but it's becoming prohibitively expensive. The combined labor and material costs end up just shy of $5,000 USD in my region, making it impractical to repeat annually. This year, I'm looking for a lighter, more cost-effective approach. My current plan involved spraying the deck with wood deck cleaner, followed by a cold-water pressure wash to prep for oiling. However, this method doesn't get the deck fully clean. In the attached image, you can clearly see the difference: the left side is cleaned using my current method, and the right side shows the result of gentle orbital sanding (which isn't feasible for me due to the deck's size). I'm considering two options: 1. Investing in a hot-water pressure washer (around 80°C / 175°F at 130 bar) to hopefully achieve a deeper clean before oiling. 2. Accepting the slight dark sheen that results from my current cleaning method and simply applying oil over it. How would you approach this situation? Any experience or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
