Is $6,000 to replace a portion of a cedar fence a fair price?
Project Details
I just stained a large portion of a new cedar fence with an oil based semi transparent dark coffee brown stain. It looks awful. Probably getting cedar was a mistake as well because of the orange hue, which I was trying to cover up with the dark stain. I am going to hire a professional to correct this but I can't figure out what needs to be done. I'm looking for honest and realistic info about the possibility of covering this up with primer and white paint. When I touch the fence my fingers are oily. I'm not even sure if I should be using cedar if I'm going to have it painted white. I replaced the previous white painted fence because I wanted less maintenance. This is a long and tall privacy fence and gates that is in the front of my home. If it were in back I might suck it up or let it fade but I basically just ruined all the curb appeal of my house and I want it fixed. And I still have 50% of the fence that is bare and I don't know what to do with it. The cure time for the brand I used (Wood Defender) is 90-180 days. I had checked the moisture levels of the boards before staining to ensure they were dried out (under 10% moisture), but I probably just put too much stain on. I'm now leaning towards replacing the boards because the stain is hard to get off with strippers. At least I didn't stain the posts yet because their moisture level was still too high. I need to cool my jets and let this cure for a few months and then see if stripping/sanding is effective without too much trouble. I've been told power washing will make it worse. I'm also wondering if people use pine if they want to paint. I'm in the Pacific Northwest.
