Is $8,000 to replace a 2-ton AC system a fair price?
Project Details
My home has two separate HVAC systems: a 4-ton unit for downstairs (which was replaced 2 years ago) and a 2-ton unit for upstairs. The upstairs unit is a Lennox, approximately 15 years old, and has lost 3 lbs of refrigerant due to a leak in the evaporation coil. I'm looking for a sanity check on the quoted price. The contractor mentioned that the new system will use 454 refrigerant because 410a can no longer be installed, and this is why they didn't recommend just replacing the coil, as it would become obsolete when the compressor eventually fails.
Quote Details
This quote is for the replacement of an existing 2-ton AC system, including both the indoor coil and the outdoor unit. - AC Unit: American Standard - Cooling Capacity: 2-ton - Efficiency (SEER): 16 - Refrigerant: 454 (new refrigerant) - Scope: New evaporation coil and new outside unit - Rationale: The contractor stated that 410a refrigerant can no longer be installed, and replacing only the coil would lead to obsolescence once the compressor fails.
