Is $850 to replace the condenser fan motor on an 18-year-old Trane AC unit a fair price?
Project Details
I posted previously due to a snake making its home on our capacitor and knocking out the system. We replaced the capacitor and wiring ourselves, but it was still tripping the breaker. Our HVAC company came out today to help us figure out what else was going on. He checked everything and found one wire that we had missed and fixed it, but the fan was not showing continuity, and it was continuing to trip the breaker when we attempted to turn the AC on. I'm reluctant to get a whole new system, but I think they do have a valid point that my current one is reaching the end of its expected life, and I may end up shelling out the full price in the next year or two anyhow. When they topped up the R-22 it seems like they couldn't find a leak (been a while, struggling to remember), and I know they said that if the levels continued to drop that we'd likely have to get a new system because we couldn't get more. That said, the levels have been fine every time we have had it serviced since then. Either way, it still sticks in my head as a ticking clock. It had been humming along fine if it weren't for the meddling snake! It never ran with the miswire, so I'm not too worried about that, but the snake capacitor fire did a considerable amount of damage. It is hard to say what else may have some residual damage. The tariff piece is the other concern. I know prices are only going to go up.
