Is $1,300 to repair a 26-year-old R22 AC unit a fair price?
Project Details
I'm a new homeowner and my 26-year-old R22 AC unit has stopped working. The technician said the capacitor, contactor, and service disconnect breaker need to be replaced because something melted the disconnect breaker. Also, the refrigerant is low, which might indicate a leak. I'm getting a quote tomorrow for a full replacement. My current unit is a Goodman. Before it completely stopped, it was blowing decently cold, but it would often hover a couple of degrees above the set temperature (e.g., 75 degrees) and wouldn't reach it until after sunset. I'm concerned about whether it's worth repairing such an old unit or if it's better to replace it, especially since I'm worried about constantly spending money on an old unit. I was told that for a house my size (1400 sqft), a replacement unit generally costs between $6,000 and $8,000. The technician seemed honest and showed me everything he was testing, and he didn't even bring up replacement; I asked about it out of curiosity.
