Is $3,438 to repair AC unit including compressor, refrigerant, and small parts a fair price?
Project Details
My AC unit is just shy of 5 years old. It stopped cooling, and I found the breaker tripped. After resetting it, the unit wouldn't run. An HVAC company diagnosed a bad capacitor, a burned-out compressor, and said the refrigerant system needed flushing and refilling with 8 gallons. I was quoted $4400, but with a year membership for $349 (which includes two inspections and waives the service charge), the price came down to $3,438.08. I think it seems overpriced, but I'm not knowledgeable about HVAC. The tech didn't leave the quote, and I had to call to get it emailed. I find it shady that the warranty covers up to 5 lbs of refrigerant, but I need 8 lbs, and they quoted for the full 8 lbs instead of just the additional 3 lbs. The refrigerant cost also seems very high compared to what I found online for a 25 lb tank.
