Is $300 to perform a more involved leak detection test a fair price?
Project Details
My 2002 HVAC system, which uses R22, has finally died. It's currently 90 degrees with high humidity in Tampa, Florida. I had planned to replace the system early next year, as I didn't budget for an $8,000 replacement right now. This is only the second time I've needed service on it. The tech said it's very low on freon, almost out (about 1lb remains), and that it's a slow leak with no major leak detected. The unit isn't blowing cold air and runs continuously in cool mode. I don't stay at my townhouse much as I'm caring for an older relative, and I keep the thermostat at 79 when away. The R22 issue is a concern. I need to find a way to delay a full replacement until early next year due to finances. It's very hot in my townhouse, especially upstairs, and I only have one portable AC unit. I'm also worried about the humidity levels. My current system is a Lennox, with an outside/condenser unit Model 10HPB36-9P and an inside/air handler Model CB29M-41-1P.
