Is $1,200 to diagnose and repair a refrigerant leak a fair price?
Project Details
My HVAC system suddenly stopped being able to keep up. Two weeks ago, the temperature delta between the register and return was 15F. When I turned it off, both the supply and return to the evaporator were cold. I checked the pressures, and they were 195psi on both sides when off, with an ambient temperature of 90F. When the unit is on, the pressures go to 68PSI low and 308PSI high, with a 95F ambient temperature, and the low line was 92F and the high line was 95F. The HVAC tech believes it's just low on refrigerant, likely due to a leak, but the rapid change in performance makes me suspect a massive leak or another issue entirely. My unit is a 5-ton Rrane and is 11 years old. I also tried putting it into heat mode, and the low side was 275psi and 144F, while the high side was 250PSI and 90F. It seems there's a leak in the indoor coils.
