Is $1,950 to fix a leaking schrader valve and refill refrigerant a fair price?
Project Details
I bought my house last year and have been doing regular furnace and heat pump maintenance. My heat pump recently stopped working, so I filed an insurance claim. The insurance company sent a contractor who initially claimed the unit hadn't worked in over a year, but I proved otherwise with a recent inspection. He later diagnosed a leaking schrader valve. Insurance approved the valve repair but not the refrigerant cost. I found the quoted price for refrigerant extremely high and declined it, asking for only the valve fix. The contractor refused to do just the valve repair and left without fixing anything. I got a second opinion from another HVAC company, who informed me my unit only holds 12 lbs, making the 15 lb refill suspicious, and suggested the refrigerant might have been removed during the first contractor's leak test. I'm questioning the first contractor's procedure and the necessity of a full 15 lb refill.
