Is $1,600 to clean HVAC system for mold a fair price?

I bought the house about a year ago. Last summer, my kids' upstairs bedrooms were very cold when the AC was on, and we noticed water droplets on a ceiling vent in my daughter's room on hot days. We had a manual damper installed, which helped. Recently, my daughter has had respiratory issues. I checked the vent in her room and found black growth. An air quality company inspected it and found 'mold' in the upstairs AC plenum and outlet ducting. This is the original 12-year-old upstairs unit. I'm questioning if the quoted professional cleaning is necessary based on the pictures, or if I can just clean the register myself.
