Is $1,500 to clean possible mold inside HVAC unit a fair price?

We had air duct cleaning people over who immediately flagged our inside HVAC unit as having black mold and pressured us to get it cleaned for $1500. I was skeptical because they determined it was black mold without testing and claimed it had spread everywhere without checking the air ducts. I told them we would not proceed without verifying if it's mold and its extent. I've ordered mold kits from Amazon and am wondering if that's a good way to tell, and if it's mold, whether cleaning it ourselves is a good idea.
