Is $5,500 to change to a dual zone HVAC system a fair price?
Project Details
I am considering forgoing this system and instead adding two manual baffles myself. My plan is to close down half the system to 50% in the applicable season (first floor gets 50% flow and second floor gets 100% in summer; first floor gets 100% flow and second floor gets 50% in winter). I believe this will put less strain on the blower while balancing out the cooling/heating where it's needed. I think the price seems a little high for what they are adding, especially since there are no design changes or upgrades to a 2-stage system, or adjustments to ducting to account for potential double flow.

This is a new construction option from the builder to convert to a dual zone system. The existing system and ducting will not undergo any design changes. The system remains a single-stage system. The following components will be added: - 2 electronic baffles (one at each of the two main trunks of the system) - 1 controller - 1 second thermostat (to be installed in the master bedroom) Trunk one services the first level, and trunk two services the second level.

Add a 2nd zone to a 2-story home's HVAC system
Add a second zone with dampers to the existing 2-stage HVAC system. - Intended to improve cooling on the 2nd floor. - Requires tearing out and redoing part of the finished basement ceiling. - Potential concerns raised by a contractor: - May require a dump zone or bypass for supply air. - May not be enough supply ducts on the 2nd floor for significant difference. - Risk of shortening equipment lifespan if the first floor zone is fully shut.
