Is $4,400 to add return air to three upstairs bedrooms and hallway, and install a media filter cabinet a fair price?
Project Details
My American Standard 5 Ton, 2-stage, 410-A HVAC system was installed approximately 2 years ago, replacing an older 1990s 5 Ton R-22 unit. One return air inlet was slightly enlarged during installation, and the condenser is located in the attic with decent space around it. My home is 2,850 sq ft (2,000 sq ft downstairs, 850 sq ft upstairs) and was built in 1982. Most of the original ductwork is still in place. The upstairs has 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a small hallway, and a return air inlet. The downstairs has another return air inlet. The estimated total return air inlet area is ~820 sq in, and the estimated supply vent area is ~1140 sq in. The system has experienced two blower motor failures since installation. The installer believes the issue is just the blower motor itself and doesn't see a larger system concern. I'm trying to determine the best path forward and am unsure if the root cause is bad luck with the blower motor or if something else in the system is contributing to these failures. I'm looking for input on what might be going on and how best to proceed.
