Is $800 to address an AC freon leak a fair price?
Project Details
My HVAC was running for 48 hours straight without stopping, and no cool air was coming out of the vents. I noticed tons of thick ice around the pipe and some hissing in the HVAC room and outside pipes. It has been over 80 degrees for the last few days. A local technician said it must be a freon leak. I found it strange that he said no one can find the leak, as I read about nitrogen pressure tests or UV dye. I also thought it was strange that the leak happened so quickly, suggesting a large leak, but the technician said the chemical sealant should plug it for weeks if big, or years if small. The technician also mentioned I might need to replace the entire AC unit since my Goodman unit is 18 years old and parts are unavailable. He also said if the leak is in the wall, we'd need to rip open walls to replace pipes. I'm wondering if the technician told the truth, if the leak can be found, if I wasted $800, and if the $800 charge for freon replacement, sealant, and cleaning is fair.
