Is $3,000 to replace an ECM motor a fair price?
Project Details
My AC (a heat pump) stopped cooling, and the fan turned off while the outside unit was still running, leading to ice on the compressor. This happened after a brief power flicker due to a thunderstorm. I called a technician, but by the time he arrived, the AC was working normally, and he couldn't determine the root cause. After he left, the fan started running very weakly again, and the air coming out was very cold, making me worry it would freeze up. I'm devastated because I hoped it could be repaired. It's unusual for it to freeze on a mild day, and the filter is less than a month old. I hose down the outdoor unit annually but have never cleaned the indoor coil. I suspect the freezing is due to the motor intermittently stopping or slowing down. We urgently need the AC working as we have a baby.
