Is $5,000 to replace an AC compressor a fair price?
Project Details
Our compressor seems to be overheating, especially in this heat. Although the unit was installed in 2022, the warranty is not transferable from the previous home owners. I didn't seem to have much of a choice since those models are harder to come by with new coolants becoming the norm. Plus this heat wave in the DC area has made no AC pretty miserable. The unit is a 2.5T system. It was definitely not installed correctly; the house was an estate sale and flipped poorly. Whoever did the work installed the wrong air handler for our high velocity system, which we replaced a few months ago. I doubt it was a licensed HVAC tech who did it. The manufacturer, Airtemp, does not allow for transfer of warranties. I'm just trying to figure out if this is a reasonable price for correcting previous mistakes. I don’t feel a need to haggle as long as I’m not getting screwed by like $1000 or more.
