Is $3,600 to replace a TXV valve a fair price?
Project Details
My auxiliary heat was turning on during the day, which worried me, so I called a company I found online. I received a quote for $3,600 to replace the TXV valve on my Carrier residential system (Carrier 50VT C36 - 30TP, located on the roof). The technician mentioned the compressor might also need looking into and recommended a full system replacement, which makes me feel duped as I paid $300 for the diagnosis and to set up a follow-up maintenance plan this year. I am a first-time home buyer and a single woman, and I'm concerned if this quote is taking advantage of me. I'm wondering if I should just get an entire new system instead. The technician stated he wouldn't know if the TXV was the real problem until it was fixed.

Replace a TXV valve on a Carrier AC unit
This quote is for the replacement of a faulty TXV valve on a 2-year-old Carrier AC unit. The TXV valve itself is covered under manufacturer warranty, so the quoted cost is for labor only. The company will need to order the part from the manufacturer. Any necessary refrigerant is not included in this price and would cost an additional $100 per pound.
