Is $18,000 to install 5 mini-split indoor units a fair price?
Project Details
I am considering a heat pump for my 1500 sq ft, single-story home in western Massachusetts. I currently heat with oil on a ducted system and have central A/C. Both the furnace and A/C unit are in the latter half of their lives, but could last longer. My oil tank is on its last legs, and I want to convert to clean energy rather than replace it and continue burning fossil fuels. I have already completed all Mass Save-recommended insulation and weatherization. My concern is that a heat pump system might not heat as well in the cold of Jan/Feb and could result in higher ongoing heating costs, despite Eversource's winter heat pump rates. I am weighing the large upfront sum against the current system still working. I am also considering taking advantage of current state rebates (decreasing next year) and a federal $2k rebate (going away next year). I also considered a heat pump water heater but will get additional quotes for that later.
