Is $10,000 to replace ductwork and add an additional return vent a fair price?

Project Details

I started to notice a musty smell coming from our air vents. Our home was built in 1984, and we had two companies come and look at our ductwork and insulation (insulation because our house gets very cold in the winter). Both companies said our ducts are in pretty bad shape and we should consider replacing them, as they are original to the home. We do not have central air but are going to consider adding it in the next 2-3 years. We do use heat quite a bit in winter as our house gets pretty cold. We have high vaulted ceilings and a lot of windows. I know nothing about ductwork, but does replacing them seem reasonable? They also recommended adding an additional return vent, as we only have one, which they said wasn't efficient due to the size of our home. Any advice is appreciated!

Quote Details

This quote is for replacing the existing ductwork, which is original to the home built in 1984. The current ducts are in poor condition and are contributing to a musty smell. - Replace existing ductwork throughout the home - Add an additional return vent to improve efficiency, as the current single return vent is insufficient for the home's size

Redo ducting and fix attic insulation

This quote outlines a plan to address significant issues with existing ducting and attic insulation identified during an extensive energy audit. The proposed work aims to improve energy efficiency and comfort by correcting previous faulty installations. - Redo existing ducting- Increase sizes of main duct trunks- Add a new return duct- Fix attic insulation, addressing previous poor installation where insulation was not placed under plywood boards and insulation baffles were omitted.- Address significant duct leakage, including areas where ducting was only taped at joints without proper couplers, leading to cooling loss into the attic.
