Is $6,500 to install new attic duct work a fair price?

Project Details

I am in the process of getting quotes for a new ducted heat pump system. During this process, it was discovered that I need new duct work in my attic. My current system is not sealed, is falling apart, and is mis-sized, which makes it difficult for air to adequately reach all ducts. While the quotes for the new heat pump system have been similar, the quotes for new ducting have varied significantly. Three other companies I contacted do not perform ducting work. I am seeking advice on whether these quotes are reasonable for my approximately 800 sqft home with 3 supply vents in Northern Colorado, as they seem high to me.

Redesign air distribution, install new duct system, and exterior ducting with stucco

This quote is for a comprehensive redesign of the home's air distribution system and installation of new ductwork, including exterior ducting and stucco work. It does not include a new AC unit or furnace, focusing solely on duct work, design, and labor. The need for this work was determined by a diagnostic that identified several issues with the existing HVAC system: - The current intake vent is undersized for the 5-ton AC unit, leading to choking and increased noise. - Significant static air loss is occurring due to poor duct work and design. - Ducts in the attic are improperly routed and hung, with excessive bends under the house, hindering airflow. The proposed solution includes: - Running new ducts on the exterior of the house. - Constructing a frame for the exterior ducts. - Applying stucco over the exterior ducts to seamlessly blend them with the house's facade. - Creating new access points to the attic through the roof for duct routing. - Relocating the main air intake from the living room floor to the attic to help exhaust hot air.
