Is $977 to replace a defrost control board a fair price?

Project Details

My AC and thermostat went out. After basic troubleshooting, I called a tech who replaced a blown 3 amp fuse in my furnace/air handler. The fuse blew again, and the tech determined the defrost board was bad and causing the short. The company quoted me $977.00 for the replacement but claimed the part was on backorder until October, then offered a quote for an entirely new system. I will not be hiring this business. I ordered the part for $130 and am replacing it myself. We are currently using a portable AC for cooling.

Replace furnace control board and tune system

This option includes replacing the control board for the furnace blower and tuning the system. The diagnosis ruled out refrigerant issues, noting that the line set was not replaced when the AC was installed. The issue was attributed to condensation dripping down, potentially frying the control board.
