Is $699 to clean ducts a fair price?

I'm asking for advice on duct cleaning. I've heard mixed opinions about its effectiveness, with some calling it a scam and others reporting varied results for allergies. I've used a family-owned HVAC company for over five years; they are acquaintances and have always seemed honest. They've never suggested duct cleaning before, but now they say there's microbial growth in the supply side that needs cleaning, disinfecting, and encapsulation. My system is between 14-17 years old, and the duct trunks have a date code of 2008. I'm trying to decide if I should get them cleaned for $699, cleaned/disinfected/encapsulated for $1800, or wait until the system needs to be replaced and then replace the ductwork, or if the ductwork is fine as is.
