Is $7,500 to remove asbestos-wrapped register boxes and replace all ductwork a fair price?
Project Details
I am currently in escrow on a home built in 1966. The previous owners at some point replaced the duct work but kept the asbestos wrapped wall and ceiling register boxes. My HVAC inspector recommended removing and remediating the asbestos and replacing all of the ductwork. I'm questioning if it's in my best interest to completely replace the duct work, or if removing the asbestos and just cleaning the existing ducts followed by an air test after would be sufficient, or if I should just not touch it. The asbestos wrap had been cut/disturbed in 1984 when the last owners replaced the ductwork. There are 12 boxes total. My concern is that it was disturbed at one point albeit 42 years ago, and the system has been contaminated. Unfortunately, local code doesn’t allow homeowners to do this work, and I’m also 30 weeks pregnant. I'm wondering if it’s necessary to completely replace all the ductwork too if we go the route of removing the asbestos.
