Is $4,000 to repair existing AC and furnace a fair price?
Project Details
My home was built in 2012, and the HVAC system is essentially original (15 years for AC, 13 years for Furnace). I know I need several repairs done immediately, including a new motor and compressor for the AC, a new compressor for the furnace, and cleaning the AC coils. The consultant mentioned the furnace isn't installed properly and the system is overheating due to airflow issues, although both AC and Heat generally work fine. My home is 3200 sqft with two zones and one HVAC system, which I believe is 4 tons. I'm likely only staying here for 6-7 more years. I'm trying to decide if it's better to invest $4K in repairs now, which might be a waste if the system breaks down later, or replace the whole system for $14K. If I sell with an old system, a buyer would likely ask for a credit. I'm also considering the upcoming refrigerant change; I might still be able to get a unit that uses 410a instead of 454b. The AC unit definitely needs a new motor, and the tech said the coils are very clogged.
