Is $7,500 to replace central air conditioning unit a fair price?
Project Details
I purchased my house last year, and it was advertised as having central air. During the inspection, it was too cold to test the AC. Last summer, the unit started failing, leaking refrigerant, and causing water to pool in the basement. It's a 20+ year old unit that uses R40 refrigerant, which is no longer available. I'm currently using window AC units for the bedrooms and am considering portable standing units for the living room/kitchen. I'm wondering if replacing the central unit is financially sensible compared to relying on window/portable units, and if the quoted prices are fair. I'm also open to considering used units.
