Is $10,000 to get designs for a kitchen remodel a fair price?

I am looking to do a kitchen remodel and received a quote for the design process. I'm questioning if the $10,000 deposit is typical, as it feels expensive, especially since I enjoy choosing some design elements myself. I was expecting or hoping for a cost closer to $1,000-$2,000. My home is valued at $400,000, was built in the 1950s, and is 2,000 sq ft. It's a galley kitchen, and I'm looking to change the layout, including taking down a wall. While it's not my "forever home," I want a nice upgrade. I'm realizing that a full-service design company might be out of my budget for this house, even though I like the designer.
