Is $1,200 to perform various small home repairs and improvements a fair price?

Project Details

So recently I took the chance of hiring a handyman. I have been doing a ton of work on my house and wanted somebody to fill in on some odd jobs around my place. I found his company from an advertisement on a small lawn sign at a busy intersection, called him, and he came out a few days later for a quote. I thought this was almost suspiciously reasonable but took him up on it. The day he was supposed to come in, no show and no word. I reached out later that day and pressed him and basically said “hey either let me know if you’re coming in or send the down payment back”. He called me back within half an hour and apologized profusely saying he’s been in the hospital and is falling behind on work. He sent me a picture of his swollen face after an abscess in his mouth was removed or something. After this he rescheduled for the next week. Again, no shows. His wife texted me apologizing profusely saying he’s back in the hospital claiming he will refund me as soon as he gets out of the hospital. That was supposed to happen last week, no follow up. I plan on reaching out again tomorrow. I truly felt for the guy but at this point I realize I may have been taken for a ride all for $600. I’m thinking if it gets pushed out any longer after tomorrow I’m just going to chalk it up to use better judgement in the future and take the loss. Payment was done through CashApp. I could probably dispute on there for services not rendered.
