Is $1,000 to replace a Hayward salt cell system a fair price?

My pool is 8 years old and we've never replaced the salt cell. It's a 19x33' above ground pool with a Hayward system. Near the end of last season, the replace salt cell light came on. My pool store said it didn't need to be replaced and just needed cleaning, but the cell has very little calcium on it. Near the end of the season I had a lot of trouble keeping the chlorine in balance, so I'm assuming the cell is the problem.

Repair a salt cell
Repair of the existing salt cell by a pool shop. This cost does not include parts.
