Is $10,330 to replace roof a fair price?
Project Details
Looking for advice on handling an unexpected higher invoice for a roof replacement. The roof was damaged last year, and I picked a reputable roofer after getting three bids. The initial estimate was $13k, and I paid a 50% deposit ($6500) using insurance proceeds. We waited four months for the crew. The salesperson visited a few times to check tarps and apologize for delays. The job took one day, with a single signed addendum for $500 for plywood. Three months later, the gutter team arrived, and two weeks after that, the salesperson inspected and said an invoice would follow. I followed up twice by voicemail and emailed the back office (cc'ing the salesperson) but received no response. This morning, I received an email demanding a final payment of $10,330. I was expecting to pay $7,000 (the remaining $6500 plus the $500 addendum). I have no idea where the extra $3,300 came from. My insurance has an allotment for depreciation/disposal ready to pay upon completion, which would cover the remainder of the $7,000. The original insurance estimate showed them paying $10,500 and me paying a $2,500 deductible, which the roofer agreed to. I have documentation showing agreed costs per item within about a hundred dollars of the initial estimate. I only signed for the $500 plywood addendum. I suspect there might be an addendum from insurance negotiations that falls into recoverable depreciation, but I was never informed of an updated amount. My deductible is $2,500.
