Is $3,000 to replace worn ridge caps a fair price?

I am trying to buy some time before doing the whole roof. I think it looks like a simple job I can do with a friend or two. I am unsure if I need to take the old ridge caps off or if I can go over the top. If I remove the old caps, I am also wondering if I need to remove the old nails and fill the holes, or if I can just pound them in.
