Is $45,680 to install a solar panel and whole home battery system a fair price?
Project Details
I am aiming to get this system done before the federal tax credit expires. Local electric company policies are not sweetening the deal at all, so from a pure investment perspective, it doesn't make sense except as a hedge against rising utility rates. My annual electricity usage is 22,000 kWh, and the projected system annual solar production is 14,500 kWh. Net metering credits over-production at the company's wholesale purchase rates, which is around $0.03/kWh, thus I'm opting for a smaller system since over-production is not currently rewarded. I hope this policy will change. My motivations are to produce some percentage of green power at home, hedge against rising utility costs, and create backup power for outages. I believe $3/watt is on the higher side, but options are limited, not due to the tax credit deadline. The professional has said he'll finish before the end-of-year, but I'm not sure if he would guarantee that in the contract, so I can ask. There are many unknowns with this decision, first and foremost being whether we will still be here in 8-10 years.
