Is $33,000 to install solar panels a fair price?
Project Details
I chose to install solar panels due to my power bills getting out of control and a local utility rate increase. My house is over 5000 sqft, but it has spray foam insulation, double pane windows, LED lights, and energy-efficient appliances. I also have a pool, two 2.5-ton HVAC units, and two 80-gallon water heaters (one usually off). I did extensive research, got 7 quotes, and aimed for a payback period of less than 7 years. I expect about $350/month in savings and a 6-year payback. My system was sized for 103% of my yearly use. I am a project manager in the power industry and a former US Navy submarine nuclear mechanic. I also noted that Duke Energy requires $1M liability insurance for systems 10kW and larger, which my umbrella policy covers.
