Is $2,200 to upgrade electrical panel for solar installation a fair price?
Project Details
I've already committed to a solar system installation (17.82 kW system, almost 23500 kWh production, with Tesla inverters) and am happy with the initial price and 7.99% interest rate, which I plan to pay off early. After the survey, the company informed me that an electrical box upgrade is needed for an additional $2,200. This makes sense to me because I already have an EV charger that uses an additional 100 Amps, and I was concerned about fitting more capacity. I'm trying to understand if this additional cost is normal after an initial inspection and if I can negotiate for the company to cover it. I am waiting for the exact specifics on the panel expansion before finalizing. There is an option to upgrade to Enphase IQ8m inverters for an additional $2,000, but the salesman suggested Tesla would be better if I wanted to add a power wall eventually.
Quote Details
This quote is for an electrical panel upgrade required after the initial solar survey. The upgrade involves installing a 200/200 line fed panel separate from the meter. This is needed to expand the capacity of the panel to accommodate the new solar system and provide load capacity for two additional 40 amp breakers. It also addresses concerns about existing electrical capacity due to an EV charger that already required a 100 amp breaker. - Panel Type: 200/200 line fed panel separate from the meter- Purpose: Expand panel capacity for solar system- Additional Capacity: Load capacity for two more 40 amp breakers- Context: Existing 100 amp breaker for EV charger
