Is $3,500 to replace an alcove tub 'like for like' a fair price?
Project Details
I am the proud owner of a historic home in St. Louis, MO. The house has only one slightly dated bathroom, and we had planned to remodel it in a couple of years after adding a half bath, which hasn't happened yet. Unfortunately, the acrylic bathtub in our sole bathroom just cracked. While it's still functional, our patch job will only last so long. We decided to use this opportunity to redo the entire bathroom now, as a 'like for like' replacement followed by a full renovation later would be less cost-effective. We hadn't started planning our vision for the bathroom, thinking it was years out, but we need to start the project in the next 8 weeks. Time is ticking to design, plan, purchase materials, and get contractors on site. We are looking for design help. Our home has a lot of historic charm that we'd like to pull into the bathroom as a throughline. We want the space to feel visually connected to the rest of the house, especially the hallway, as it's a small house. We will be installing a new bathtub, as we are aware that you should always have at least one bathtub in the house for future buyers with children or those who want to take a bath. We are working with a designer and looking to bring inspiration to our first meeting with them next week. We are planning to fully enclose the shower with a hinged glass door, as it's too cold in STL during the winter for an open design. We are hearing $1500 is an entry point for glass shower doors in our market. We are aiming for a 'period appropriate' look without being too on-the-nose.
