Is $20,000 to remodel a master bathroom a fair price?
Project Details
I hired a GC company for a turnkey master bath remodel for $20,000, which seemed a bit on the cheaper side. I lost trust due to numerous issues during the project. The contractor initially suggested a very cheap shower system, so I purchased a $1400 Kohler system myself. The plumbers installed the diverter valve incorrectly (cold on left, hot on right) and a leaking tub valve required multiple fixes. The tile contractors laid backerboard without thinset or tape, and waterproofing was inadequate (only some Redguard along seams). They filled the shower pan with mortar on top of the liner without a leak test, despite my request. The Schluter job on the curb was terrible, and they used floor tile of a different tint than I ordered. I am now asking them to remove everything down to the studs and plan on firing them. During my own demolition, I discovered the niche tile was directly on drywall and all tile is easily removable, suggesting improper thinset application. I am concerned about the actual labor skills, plumbing, and waterproofing, as these issues could jeopardize my house or family's health. I acknowledge my mistake in choosing the cheapest option and not getting a third quote, as another company quoted $45,000. I am currently demoing the entire bathroom myself and getting two more quotes from contractors who have worked for me before. I have a contract that listed demo, plumbing, electricity, tile and tile labor, cabinetry, and allowances for tile and some hardware, with the mirror being the only exclusion. I am looking into filing a small claim case to recover money for undone work.

Remodel a bathroom
This quote is for a full bathroom remodel. The work included tile installation and grouting. However, issues have been identified with the grout, which is running out and has cavities. Additionally, the tile work exhibits inconsistent grout lines (some over, some under 1/8 inch). There was also a delay of over a week between grout completion and the installation of the shower head and knob.
