Is $9,675 to install engineered wood flooring and stairs for a section of the house a fair price?
Project Details
I am in Couer D'Alene, Idaho, doing a new build. I am getting quotes from bigger flooring stores for engineered wood with two staircases and about 2800 square feet of floor. Since it's a brand new build, there is no demo and the subfloors should be immaculate. I did an addition in California in 2022, and my contractor's bid for install (labor only) was $6/sq ft. The quotes I'm getting now are hard to decipher because they won't split out materials and labor. For one section of the house (561 sq ft with 17 stairs), the line item including all materials and labor is $9,675. The materials cost for just the engineered wood product is $4.54/sq ft. If I subtract the wood material cost ($2,547), I'm left with a labor/install materials cost of $7,129, which comes out to $15.27/sq ft. Even adjusting for install materials and stair noses, this seems astronomically high to me. A friend in the Bay Area of CA was quoted $7/sq ft for install of a comparable wood product by a high-end design-build firm, so I'm confused and want to make sure this seems right.
