Is $10,000 to replace kitchen floor a fair price?

Project Details

My dad's kitchen floor is in very bad condition with broken tiles and warped baseboards, and I'm trying to make the space more livable for him. I work in solar and do painting and Christmas lights contracting, so I'm not totally green in trades projects, but I don't know anything about floors. I'm wondering if I can do this project myself in a weekend for under $1500 in materials, as the professional quote of $10k+ is scaring me off. I'm not looking for a luxury finish, just something that doesn't look like a 'rathole'. I believe professionals in my area (Western Massachusetts) tend to use high-end materials, which might explain the high cost. I'm just looking to rip it up, cut it out, screw it, and glue it, and might even consider vinyl sheeting.
