Is $3,500 to install a two-zone zoning kit a fair price?
Project Details
I recently purchased a two-story, 1,350 sq ft condo in Georgia, built in 1970. This summer, I've experienced a major issue with the air conditioning system: the upstairs is uncomfortably hot, while downstairs remains cool at about 72 degrees. I've already added insulation to the attic and use blackout curtains, but the problem persists. The HVAC company that installed my new condenser confirmed the system is running well but noted that the single downstairs thermostat prevents temperature equilibrium. They previously suggested a zoned system to the prior owner, who declined. I'm seeking opinions on whether a zoned system is the best long-term solution compared to window units for upstairs, and if the quoted price is reasonable for the Atlanta area. I understand the core issue is insufficient air diversion/force upstairs. I'm also considering the pros and cons of an inverter-driven compressor and variable speed air handler, and a dual-zone mini-split system upstairs with two head units, as a whole new system is beyond my current budget. My wife works nights, so quiet operation is important.
